No matter how much or how little you have to store in your bedroom, you need to make the most of your storage space. Even the most minimalistic bedroom can look cluttered and ugly if you don’t have a place for everything. Here are some bedroom storage ideas for various things in your bedroom.
Clothing
If you have a dresser, it’s pretty self-explanatory that it’s meant for clothes. If, like me, you find that a dresser makes a small room even smaller, you can completely do away with your dresser. Instead, I made creative use of the rest of the space in my bedroom. For shirts, I purchased Wonder Hangers. I typically hate infomercial products, but Wonder Hangers are the exception–they allow me to hang both mine and my husband’s shirts in one closet without squeezing them too close together. Each wonder hanger holds 5 regular hangers, and each box of hangers comes with 8 Wonder Hangers.
For storing pants, I got a small rolling cart with one top shelf and one lower shelf. It’s about the width of our closet, so I just stuck it in the closet. I use the top shelf for my husband’s pants, and the lower one for mine. When you do this, you have to switch them out pretty frequently as the seasons change. It’s helpful to have underbed storage or basement storage space to allow for this.
Other things, like underwear, bras, socks, and swimming suits didn’t fit with pants or shirts. I bought a cheapy over-the-door shoe holder and hung it so it faces into the closet. I also put pajama pants in there, since they don’t need to be folded. If you roll them tightly, they fit nicely into a shoe holder.
Books
A bookcase looks nice in a bedroom, but it’s not always practical. If you can’t anchor it to the wall, it can be dangerous. If you are short on space, it can cramp your space further. I prefer to go up with my storage, since floor “real estate” is the most valuable. Shelves that you can screw into the wall can hold several books. Placing them strategically around the room gives you space for plenty of books without lowering the amount of space you have to walk around and be comfortable. An added bonus? These shelves are great for decorations, photos, and knick-knacks.
Comforters and Sheets
If your house is like ours, you don’t have a closet just for sheets and comforters, and your mattresses only need one set at a time. I certainly wish I had an extra closet some days! However, we have to make do with what we have. We use the space under our bed for comforters and sheets. Some beds come built with drawers just for this purpose. Ours doesn’t, but it’s high enough off the ground to slide comforters and sheet sets in. Stores like Target and Shopko sell special underbed canvas storage bags if you are worried about your sheets or comforters getting messy or unorganized. If your bed is not tall enough for underbed storage, you can get boosts that elevate your bed, adding a bit of extra space for storage. Underbed storage is also excellent for out-of-season clothes.
Jewelry
Storing jewelry is easy when you, again, make use of VERTICAL space instead of just relying on furniture and ground storage! By installing hooks wrapped with twine on your wall, you can make a beautiful jewelry hanger; many people hang the hooks and intertwine them to look like trees, earth, or other designs. If you don’t mind using a small bit of ground space, using a tall jewelry armoire is good for people who have lots of jewelry.
While this is not an exhaustive list of everything you need to store in your bedroom, it does tackle some major bedroom storage ideas. As you get used to thinking of out-of-the-box ways to enhance your bedroom storage, you will think of even more ways to keep your room clutter-free and organized.
